Dinner at Zarela's by Susana Trilling

Enjoying a beautiful friday evening at casa de Zarela. Susana Trilling is preparing some wonderful Oaxacan eats. So far we have tasted a shrimp ceviche with spicy avocado paste, matched with reposado Scorpion Mezcal to fire up the evening and leave a pleasant aftertaste. Next we will be trying chicken tacos made with Chintestle, a Oaxacan smoked chile paste.

Taco Truck 75th street in Jackson Heights

Every Monday morning I find myself in Jackson Heights as I attempt to defeat my common allergies. Do allergy shots work? Who knows? What I do know is that I'm not allergic to these tacos and as long as they're here on the corner of 75th street and Roosevelt ave, I'll be here every Monday.

I had a chorizo and al pastor taco. Generously served and tender meat mixed with a combination of flavorful spices, onions, cilantro and real saucy guac.

Stay tuned for the rise of the taco trucks. They seem to be sprouting all over NYC slowly conquering the halal street meat strongholds.

The Next Iron Chef is Latino

Chef Jose Garces rose to the top as he became the Next Iron Chef. In 2008 he defeated Bobby Flay as a competitor in Iron Chef. The secret recipe for the final competition was racks and ribs. Garces created buffalo rib steak au poivre; Mexican-style braised carnitas taco; Pork loin with herbs; Spanish pizza with beef short ribs; and Baby back ribs with spicy BBQ sauce.

With a menu like that, it's easy to understand why he won. He promises to include his Latin style of cooking and flavors to the Iron Chef competitions where he will be featured.

This is a big day in the world of Latin Cuisine. Chef Garces, we congratulate you.
